Xytel designed and built many multi-reactor pilot plants for catalyst testing. Reactions include hydrotreating, hydrocracking, Fischer-Tropsch wax hydrocracking, reforming, paraffin isomerization, residue hydroconversion.
Reactor volume is 50mL typical. Catalyst volume is 5-10mL. The pilot plant can be designed with a common furnace for all the reactors or independant furnaces, one per reactor. Independant furnaces enable our customers to acquire a large number of data in a short period of time relative to a single catalyst, in order to derive a kinetic model or 'correlations' of the catalyst in operation.
The PLC, analyses and feed section are shared by the reactors.
Main difference with catalyst screening is that the feed is a real one (VGO, middle distillate, full range naphtha, etc.) and full mass balance. Catalyst activities and selectivities obtained using this equipment are very comparable to those obtained using larger catalyst volumes.
